Story Excerpts

Nine ½ Lives brings together 20 writers, both seasoned and new, professionals and everyday cat lovers. Our contributors come from Canada, the United States, France and the UK. All united by their devotion to feline senior citizens. Their stories share beautiful moments with their old friends.

“We had grown up together. I was part of her, and she was part of me.

This is supposed to be a story about an old cat. But, like most things in life, you have to know the beginning and the middle before you can understand the end.”

Bootsie, the Companionable Cat

“There’s a phenomenon in cat companionship where we rarely research options to choose our ideal, dream cat. Instead, a cat just appears one day, and doesn’t leave. They’re found in a ditch, under a shed, or in the hollow of a tree…”

The Fearless and Friendly T.J.

“Monty was already a mature 12-year-old tuxedo gentleman when a friend who worked for a cat charity brought him to my door. He’d been handed in at a local vet, and nothing more was known about him. Monty’s one eye looked up at me; I knew he had lost all his teeth. He was compact and bijou, probably the runt of the litter, so much so that passersby would ask, “How many months is he?” But in many ways, he was always larger than life.”

A Senior Lad with a Young Heart

“I thought she had the most beautiful piercing green eyes I’d ever seen in a cat. Others told me those eyes scared them when she stared them down. More than once, she coughed up a hairball at the feet of a new boyfriend. I should have trusted her razor-sharp feline instincts.”
